It's ridiculous but I would just save the hassle and go CHP because DMV won't argue with their authority for some reason. Not in CA each DMV offices all operate differently even though they are all looking at the same VC. ![]() I know there are many info online suggesting that you can use Vin verifier or any police officer. If any of you are in similar situation I suggest just going straight to CHP. I'll never ever buy another vehicle without title though. Now I can start work on it without being worried someone else might come claim as theirs. I am however glad that the car is officially mine, I feel like I got a giant weight off my shoulder and I haven't even started working on it other than exterior tear down. So today I finally rented a Uhaul (cost me 200 dollars for this rental, what a rip) and took it to CHP office to get it verified. I asked why, lady told me because the vin verifier did not check that it had US Federal required VIN plate. I take that back to a different clerk at a different DMV office (mistake) and they so rudely stamped 'CHP VERIFICATION REQUIRED'. I paid the vin verifier 50 bux to do a house call. Initially I was told I just had to get a VIN verification from any Police officer or vin verifier. I have NEVER had this kind of experience with a State agency where each DMV office interprets the VC set by Sacramento and does things differently. Problem was that they had no documentation/title of it and it 'fell out' of California DMV.įor some reason I had to have the car so I got a Uhaul and drove 4 hours to pick this up. San Jose built, LA district ordered (I will be doing YOM once I find a 68 decal for it). I purchased a 68 coupe that claimed to have been in owners' family possession since new. But not spending another dime 'till I know what the hell I'm dealing with. Most of it will go to an account for my retirement, but I want to hold a couple grand out for an engine for this project. I have a pretty stupid check coming tomorrow. I just want to figure out if I can get a title before I spend any money on it. And if it's a PITA for the dealer, all the better. They really did seem pretty helpful on the phone. Dunno.īut I'll see what the CA DMV folks can do for me first. If that's what those title replacement people do, berkeleyin' A I'll pay them $400 to do it. But when I started through about page four I decided it was going to get really expensive and time consuming. I know bonding in illinois is cheap, like $50 cheap (plus regular title fees and taxes). Even if I can't get the title, I sure plan to do everything I can to make the dealership unhappy if only to prevent them from doing anything like this again. I'm not 100% sure this will work out, but at least it seems there is some means of trying to move it forward. ![]() I'm filling out a Record of Complaint Form. She gave me the wrong number, but the woman who answered the phone at Internal Affairs got me the right number. So the nice woman at the DMV directed me to the California DMV Investigations Department. I didn't get a registration and the car isn't in my name. They also told me they mailed me the registration. Now, I don't know what happened, so I won't accuse anyone of anything, but the dealer assured me they had filed all the paperwork to transfer the title to my name. It is still in the name of the previous owner. They checked the VIN and found that it is not in my name. First off, they were pretty helpful, so that made me happy. Since has never been registered in Colorado they said I can't file for a duplicate title. So the question is, assuming (and that's a big assumption) that the title was actually transferred to my name, is getting a duplicate title from California a reasonably easy thing to do? It does have current California registration. Well, about four weeks ago he swore to me he filed the lost title paperwork and everything with the state. ![]() Then just couldn't get them to actually go to the DMV and take care of it. First sounds like they couldn't find the title. I guess that's how it works there- can't imagine they made that up. He did all the paperwork and told me the state would mail me the title. I bought it from some rinky dink dealer in early June. I wanted the lightest one I could find, so I got one in So Cal and drove it back to Denver. I'm building an autocross car, but want it to be street legal. ![]()
